Naviguer sur la planète Terre n’est pas jojo quand on a une pauvre estime de soi. Pour commencer, on se sent petit et insignifiant. Puis, nos désirs de beauté, d’amour et d’expression entrent constamment en conflit avec l’image qu’on a de nous. On croit que les gens qui nous aiment n’ont pas de goût, ou qu’ils se lasseront de nous dès qu’ils nous connaîtront vraiment. On vit dans l’attente constante d’être rejeté ou abandonné, et on s’arrange même parfois pour que ça se produise sans le réaliser.

Dans le but de se libérer de ce stress, on tentera souvent de se convaincre qu’on a de la valeur. On répétera des affirmations positives, par exemple. Quand on sentira la peur d’être rejeté se pointer, on tentera de se rappeler qu’on est une personne grande et belle, digne d’être aimée. On cherchera également la confirmation de notre valeur à travers nos accomplissements, notre apparence, le regard de nos proches. Quand ils partageront leur appréciation, on boira leurs paroles, on tentera ardemment de les croire.

Aucune de ces stratégies n’est suffisante, ni même vraiment efficace, bien sûr. Du moins, jamais pour longtemps. Car en réalité, il n’y a qu’une seule et unique vraie façon de se convaincre qu’on est une personne digne d’amour et d’attention. La voici : c’est en se traitant soi-même avec amour et attention. Point final. Oui, quoi qu’on en pense, on arrivera à croire profondément qu’on mérite d’être chéri et pris au sérieux seulement en se chérissant et en se prenant au sérieux, jour après jour, pensée après pensée, action après action. Il n’y a pas de raccourci, et pas d’autre option.
